Competition for female students

Competition for the Best ICT Girls

Within the celebration of the International Girls in ICT Day, we are hereby launching a competition for the female students of technological faculties with the following theme:

What can you do in Serbia in 2020 with the broadband
Internet access?

Make a video which lasts between 40 seconds and one minute, which shows the situation before and after introducing of broadband Internet access in every household in Serbia. Show how it will affect individuals, development of society and/or economy in Serbia. Give rein to your imagination.

We are initiating this theme, on the occasion of celebration of the International Girls in ICT Day, in order to support the female students of technological faculties on their way to successful career, and to motivate them to think creatively about the future in Serbia, which lies in their hands. At the same time, we want to raise the awareness in Serbia about the significance of development of the Internet infrastructure.

Broadband Internet means large and symmetrical capacity towards Internet. So, download and upload are equal. At the moment, upload is 3-4 times lower than download - via ADSL or cable Internet access.

European Union's Digital Agenda prescribes that each citizen of Europe should have Internet access with minimum speed of 30Mb/s until 2020, and that at least half of households should be subscribed to Internet with the minimum speeds of 100Mb/s.

Different researches are showing that using of ICT (Information-Communications Technologies) has greater effect on growth of economy in the countries with small and medium incomes, than in the countries with high incomes, and that the broadband access has the greatest effect on this growth, compared to other communication technologies.

Effects of ICT can be directly measured, and the investments, needed for the implementation of ICT network infrastructure, are relatively small. Investments in ICT infrastructure are 3 to 15 times smaller compared to the investments needed for water, electricity, gas supply and sewer infrastructure. Investment in broadband infrastructure for entire Serbia is approximately the same as the investment for construction of 100km of highway.

Average increase of broadband penetration of 10%, effects the growth of economy (gross domestic product, GDP) for 1.3%.

Benefits of ICT using, and especially broadband Internet access, also have the effect on social goals, such as social inclusion and environmental protection.

Here is what you should do with your video response to the given theme:

  1. Upload it to the website www.sendspace.com
  2. Type „BB Internet in Serbia 2020”, your name and surname, in the field „Description”
  3. Upon the successful upload, you will receive a "download link" for video to your mail
  4. 4. Send the e-mail with „BB Internet in Serbia 2020” in the „subject”, to the following address girlsday@mtt.gov.rs with the following information in the message: your name and surname, faculty which you attend, your contact phone number, and the link for download of your video from the website sendspace.com

The competition is open until April the 19th.

The winners will be announced, and valuable prizes delivered, at the Career Mixer Party, on the occasion of celebration of the Girls in ICT Day, on April 23, 2012.
